With Roman Tragedies, Ivo van Hove and Jan Versweyveld created a production that became synonymous with Toneelgroep Amsterdam the world over. For this theatre marathon they brought Shakespeare's Coriolanus, Julius Caesar and Antony & Cleopatra together into one great political epic.

What made the production revolutionary was the way audiences and actors shared the same space. Visitors could move freely about the stage, eat and drink on the playing area and decide for themselves how they followed the political drama. Live video, news screens and multimedia produced a form of theatre that was ahead of its time.
 

Since its world premiere at the Holland Festival in 2007, Roman Tragedies has travelled the world. From London and Avignon to New York, Adelaide and Seoul, the production grew into an international phenomenon. Chris Nietvelt received the Theo d'Or for her role as Cleopatra and the production was selected for the Nederlands Theater Festival.
