Lieve Stad, 2022
The fourth edition of Lieve Stad, starts on 25 March and runs until 3 April. Lieve Stad, is a festival realised in cooperation between Meervaart and ITA. In ITA, we jointly present a wide variety of productions in the fields of theatre, dance, music, and performance. Performances that are about the city but especially about the people who live there, their stories, their history. How do we relate to each other and to the metropolitan environment in which we live? With Lieve Stad, we want to bring different and new perspectives into the spotlight and create encounters with the (still) unknown. This year, the festival features performances by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Lucas de Man, Theater Rast, Michael Varekamp and Smita James, among others.
Stichting Nieuwe Helden / ARSENAAL / Het Zuidelijk Toneel / Lucas De Man - 29 March
IN SEARCH OF DEMOCRACY 3.0
In March it is time: The Netherlands can go and vote in the municipal elections. But how is our democracy doing? Research has shown that trust in democracy is declining worldwide, and our Dutch democracy is also under pressure. It is high time to take a close look at democracy: something has to change, but what exactly and how?
Marleen Hendrickx - 30 March
X Y WE
X Y WE is a powerful performance that effectively and truthfully offers a glimpse into the lives of intersex people. On the floor are six people, of all ages, who each and together tell their story, some for the first time in their lives.
Amsterdams Andalusisch Orkest - 2 April
Tree of Being
The concert The Tree of Being is an ode to the medieval Sufi poet Ibn Arabi, who believed in the primal power of trees and considered them the perfect creation of the universe. Eight soloists of the orchestra translate Arabi's poetry into music.
Michael Varekamp / Smita James
Lieve Stad, - I am
On 25 March 2022, trumpeter Michael Varekamp and spoken word artist Smita James will reminisce in the name of love, the love for Amsterdam, but also take the temperature. Together with Poetronic, the band of Michael Varekamp and Smita James will take the stage to get a clear view of the stories that carry this love.
EASTMAN / SIDI LARBI CHERKAOUI
Nomad is Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's fourth piece set to Middle Eastern-inspired music by Basement Jaxx's Felix Buxton and a metaphor for ultimate freedom, but also for the impossibility of survival. Nomad' is a mosaic of living and inanimate elements of the desert.
Theater RAST / Celil Toksöz
EEN GENADELOZE GOD
Een genadeloze god tells the true story of Hallâc, a Sufi mystic and poet from the 9th century whose skin was gutted because he said that every person contains a piece of God. Een genadeloze god is a gripping performance about freedom of speech on the one hand and religious intolerance and abuse of power on the other.
Female Economy / ITA-junior
DOULA'S VAN DE STAD + WIJOOK JR.
The project Doulas van de Stad was supposed to play live with us, but became a documentary. Adelheid and her team tell the stories of the women and the makers team of ITA of their daughters. Now both projects are in one afternoon in the Grote Zaal of ITA. Connected 'in spirit', on this afternoon they will join forces to talk about the power of women and prohibition.
Het Zuidelijk Toneel / The Black Archives / De Correspondent / Lisette Ma Neza / Ira Kip
HIER ZIJN WE KONINGEN
For a long time, Lisette Ma Neza did not want to think about her own story. Inspired by the series 'Hidden History' written by Karin Amatmoekrim for De Correspondent, she ventures to unravel what was deeply hidden in a backpack. Luggage that she carried everywhere but never looked into.
Our ITA Academy again organises various activities during the festival. Prior to In Search of Democracy 3.0. on 29 March there is an Artist Talk with Lucas De Man in the Salon. We are also organising a number of editions of In Gesprek. The final dates and guests will be communicated later.
During the entire festival the photo exhibition The Homesickness Project will be on display in our theatre. This exhibition full of stories about homesickness was created by Biba Krklec (tv-programme maker) and Siebren Hodes (researcher, producer and sound engineer). Homesickness is of all ages and all cultures. In this exhibition you can read homesickness stories and see photos of homesick people from Amsterdam. For Lieve Stad, Biba and Siebren added an interactive element to the exhibition.
THE HOMESICKNESS PROJECT
Homesickness is of all ages and all cultures. This is the basis of The Homesickness Project, which can be seen in ITA from Friday 25 March to Sunday 3 April during the Lieve Stad, festival.
ARTIST TALK: LUCAS DE MAN
In this edition of our new Artist Talks programme, our moderator Carolien Borgers, together with the audience, talks to renowned theatre maker Lucas de Man. Sitting in the salon, with a drink in hand, we discuss his oeuvre, working methods, fascinations and wishes for the future and reflect together on the theatre landscape and the role De Man plays.
Ode to the city
Amsterdam is a city of many faces, literally, because we live here together with many different nationalities. Lieve Stad is about the city and all its inhabitants. This festival is about bringing people together, in the city, in the theatre, in society. How do we live together and what stories do all individuals and groups carry with them? They all have their own stories, strengths and challenges. Showing these is the starting point of Lieve Stad.
