The stories from a thousand-and-one nights still capture the imagination. Writer and presenter Abdelkader Benali compellingly tells the story of Shahrazade and how she manages to enchant the tyrant of Baghdad with her storytelling so much that she manages to postpone her own execution by a day each time. Abdelkader gives a modern twist to the fairy tales and Club Classique matches music and words.

Een nacht met Sjahrazade

We are introduced to the tyrant of Baghdad. After being cheated in love, he swears revenge. Every night he takes a young maiden to wife and has her killed the next morning. Shahrazade is convinced she can cure the tyrant of his vindictiveness by telling him stories. She lets her father marry her off to the tyrant and starts telling.

In this way, she hopes not only to reverse her own fate, but also to save all the other women. Will she succeed? The stories are framed by classical music inspired by the Orient and played by the musicians of Club Classsique. A magical and sensual experience with a wonderful blend of exotic sounds and imaginative music.

Club Classique

You meet them everywhere: in the concert hall, around the corner in the café, at home on the tube, just out in the wild in a meadow and in theatres! Performances by Club Classique are full of exciting combinations, unexpected twists and moving stories. Violinist Myrthe Helder and cellist Leonard Besseling form the beating heart and think in music, stories, theatre forms and images. They work and play together with writers, poets, filmmakers and actors. Music, images and stories reinforce each other and form one flowing whole.

Festival Lieve Stad,

Amsterdam is a city of many faces, literally, because we live here together with many different nationalities. Lieve Stad is about the city and all its inhabitants. This festival, a collaboration between ITA and Meervaart, is about bringing people together, in the city, in the theatre, in society. How do we live together and what stories do all individuals and groups carry with them? They all have their own stories, strengths and challenges. Showing these is the starting point of Lieve Stad,.
