The human voice tells the story of a woman who telephones her former lover for the last time. He ended their relationship a few days earlier. The woman tries in vain to keep the line open: at first still optimistic and in denial, later more desperate and self-destructive. Slowly the picture of their past relationship emerges, and with it the realisation that her lover has chosen someone else for good.
 
The human voice not only travelled the world in its Dutch version: in 2022 Van Hove also made a remake of the production in London's West End with the British actress Ruth Wilson.
