Weg met Eddy Bellegueule
‘Beyond a doubt, the best play of the year’ - NRC Handelsblad
Édouard Louis took the world by storm with his successful autobiographical novel The End of Eddy. Without much frills but with ample dry wit, the novel tells the life story of a homosexual boy in an extremely homophobic environment. Director Eline Arbo made an acclaimed theatrical and musical adaptation of this novel. Eline Arbo will direct De Uren later this season at ITA.
duration 100 min without intermission
With English subtitles
Growing up in a small village in Northern France – in a mundane, vulgar and merciless working-class environment – the gentle and sensitive Eddy is doing his best to fit in. We follow him during his many attempts at being a ‘normal boy’. Eventually though, he sees no other option than to leave his family behind and start over somewhere else.
Director Eline Arbo made her own theatrical and musical adaptation of this novel. ‘As if it were a compelling choreography, text, music and stage design are constantly interacting with each other, resulting in a colourful and unpredictable evening of theatre.’ Eline Arbo will direct De Uren later this season at ITA. -|- Four young actors play all the characters. Their astounding performance earned them a nomination for the Louis d’Or. It is the first time that multiple actors are nominated as one. ‘Victor IJdens, Jesse Mensah, Felix Schellekens and Romijn Scholten are a force to be reckoned with. Their loving, energetic and emotional performance is void of any vanity.’ - jury’s report of the Dutch Theatre Festival. Actor Jesse Mensah will be added to the ensemble of ITA upcoming season.
Both the press and the audience, as well as writer Édouard Louis himself, were overwhelmed and moved after seeing the play. The play became the no. 1 theatre hit of 2020. Eline Arbo was given the VSCD directing award for this production and the performance was selected for the Dutch Theatre Festival: ‘Weg Met Eddy Bellegueule never becomes judgmental, but makes an almost impossible compassion palpable. The result is electrifying, heart-breaking and sincere theatre, which will haunt you for months to come.’ - jury’s report of the Dutch Theatre Festival.
