With Medea, the Australian writer and director Simon Stone made his first production for Toneelgroep Amsterdam. It was the beginning of a collaboration that would later lead to productions such as Ibsen House and Flight 49.

For his adaptation, Stone placed Euripides' classical tragedy in a contemporary context. He combined the ancient myth with a true American family tragedy and in doing so created an oppressive psychological drama about love, loss and revenge. His sharp dialogue and cinematic acting style would go on to become his hallmark.

The production also marked a high point in Marieke Heebink's career. For her portrayal of Anna she received the Theo d'Or for the most impressive female leading role in 2015. Press and audiences praised her intense performance and Stone's uncompromising direction.
