For The Maids, Mitchell made a contemporary version of Jean Genet's famous play. With her sharp direction and her eye for social themes she gave the classic a present-day meaning. The production connected with subjects that play an important role in her work, such as power, inequality and the position of women in society.

The production was received with acclaim by press and audiences. The performances of Marieke Heebink and Chris Nietvelt drew particular praise. Critics singled out the intensity of the production, the strong interplay between the actors and Mitchell's clear and innovative direction. The Maids grew into one of the most striking productions of that season.

After the premiere in Amsterdam the production was also seen on other stages at home and abroad. In doing so, The Maids once again confirmed the international standing of Toneelgroep Amsterdam and its collaboration with leading theatre-makers from outside the Netherlands.
