Borda
Lia Rodrigues is one of Brazil's most influential choreographers. Her work is raw, daring and deeply rooted in social themes. After the critically acclaimed performances of Furia and Encantado at previous iterations of Julidans, she returns this year with Borda. In it, she raises a pertinent question: what exactly is a border? In Portuguese, borda can mean both ‘border’ and ‘embroidery’, symbolising separation and interconnectedness at the same time.
Borders often seem like hard lines between countries, cultures and people, marked by walls and fences. But they can also be fluid, shaped by language, smells, rituals and stories that blend and enrich each other. Borda demonstrates that a border is not only an obstacle, but also an opportunity to discover new worlds, a colourful celebration of life.
In this tightly choreographed, associative dance performance, Rodrigues explores the visible and invisible borders we cross every day. How can we live together in a world full of divisions? Within these constructed frameworks, how do we carry our memories and dreams with us? Perhaps by creating a space in which these margins begin to move, float and dance...

Rodrigues is known for her inclusive approach. She takes great care to engage local communities and provides a stage for voices that often go unnoticed or unheard. Her performances have captivated audiences around the world with their raw energy and vibrant Brazilian spirit. An interplay of voices, colours and atmospheres.
With her uncompromising vision, Lia Rodrigues proves that dance is more than motion. It is an act of change, a way of opening worlds and a call for solidarity. Her work touches, challenges and inspires - an artistic and social revolution in motion.
Lia Rodrigues Companhia de Danças is based in the Maré, one of Rio de Janeiro's largest favelas. In 2004, Rodrigues founded the Centro de Artes da Maré, a place where art, education and social change come together. In 2014, she received the Prince Claus Award for her impressive body of work.
More about Lia Rodrigues
Lia Rodrigues (1956, São Paulo) studied classical ballet and history at USP and became part of the contemporary dance movement in the 1970s. After dancing with Maguy Marin (1980–1982), she founded the Lia Rodrigues Companhia de Danças in Rio de Janeiro in 1990. From 1992 to 2005, she also directed the influential Panorama Festival.
Since 2004, her company has been rooted in the Maré favela, developing a unique fusion of artistic creation and community work. Out of this grew the Centro de Artes da Maré (2009) and the Free Dance School of Maré (2011).
