The Main Auditorium (Grote Zaal) has been the heart of Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam since 1894. With over 750 seats, richly decorated balconies, chandeliers and classical ornaments, it is one of the most remarkable theatre auditoriums in the Netherlands. Stories, artists and audiences have been coming together here for more than a century.

Its historical character and impressive scale make the Grote Zaal ideally suited to events that are meant to impress: from award shows and presentations to premieres, film screenings and dinners on stage.

A theatre built to see and be seen in

The Grote Zaal was designed in the classical horseshoe shape that was typical of the great European court theatres of the nineteenth century. That shape meant that visitors had a good view not only of the stage but also of one another. An evening at the theatre was at the time just as much a social occasion as a cultural outing.

In the middle of the first balcony the royal box can still be found. Places here were once kept free for members of the Royal Family. Today they are still among the finest seats in the auditorium.
