Thanks to its large, flat and open stage floor, almost anything is possible in the Rabozaal. This contemporary auditorium combines the technical capabilities of a modern black box with the intimacy of a theatre. In the Rabozaal, there is no such thing as a bad seat: the sightlines in this relatively new auditorium are excellent and the facilities are thoroughly up to date.

The back wall of the stage is a special feature: it can be opened, letting daylight flood in through the glass wall so the atmosphere changes throughout the day.

A flexible black box

One wish was central to the design in 2007: a flexible black box and flat-floor theatre to complement the monumental Grote Zaal. The collaboration between Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, Toneelgroep Amsterdam and the Melkweg produced a contemporary auditorium that fully meets the needs of today's makers, audiences and organisers. The Rabozaal is now a much-loved auditorium for national and international dance companies, and a large proportion of ITA Productions have their premiere here. And during ADE the auditorium becomes a temple of dance.
