The story behind the name

The Gijsbrechtbordes takes its name from the mosaic that refers to Gysbrecht van Aemstel, the famous play by Joost van den Vondel. He wrote the work in 1638 to mark the opening of the first Amsterdam Schouwburg on the Keizersgracht.

For centuries, Gysbrecht van Aemstel was Amsterdam's traditional New Year show. Generations of theatregoers began the year with the same story, which made the play one of the best-known traditions in Dutch theatre history.
