At the top of the staircase, next to the Koninklijke Foyer, lies the Marnixbordes: an intimate space with richly decorated walls, historic paintings and views of the architecture of Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam. Far from the bustle of the Leidseplein, it is a surprisingly quiet spot for gatherings and presentations.

Its small scale makes the space particularly suited to gatherings where personal contact takes centre stage.

Where visitors found their way through the theatre

In the distant past, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam was a theatre organised by social class. Visitors from different classes used their own entrances, stairwells and foyers. The Marnixbordes was part of that arrangement too. Through this stairwell, visitors reached the second balcony of the Grote Zaal. The architecture of the building therefore still tells us something about the society in which the theatre was built at the end of the nineteenth century.
