The balcony where Amsterdam comes together

Where guests now gather for drinks or dinner, important moments in Amsterdam's history were once celebrated. The entrance terrace (bordes) was originally built so that the entrance was covered. That way, visitors arriving by carriage could step out without getting wet. Only later did the bordes become a place for public tributes and gatherings.

From the balcony, generations of Amsterdammers were addressed and cheered. Here thousands of supporters celebrated as Ajax was honoured. During his visit to the Netherlands in 1990, Nelson Mandela was greeted from this spot by a packed and loudly cheering Leidseplein. To this day it remains one of the city's most remarkable vantage points.
