The Pleinfoyer is on the first floor of Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, directly beside the Main Auditorium (Grote Zaal). Thanks to that central location it is a versatile space for receptions, presentations, meetings and festive gatherings. The room is light, fully restored in 2025, and breathes theatre. All of its windows look out over the lively Leidseplein. The Pleinfoyer is the first space you come to from the information hall and can be closed off - ideal for a private event or a pre-show reception before a programme in the Grote Zaal or Rabozaal.

From gentlemen's foyer to meeting place

The Pleinfoyer was formerly known as the Smoking Foyer or Gentlemen's Foyer. Male visitors gathered here during the interval, while their wives were received in the Koninklijke Foyer. On the landing, just before you went into the foyer, there were numbered racks in which gentlemen could keep their cigars to collect again after the show.

Historic details and contemporary art come together in the Pleinfoyer. The space is characterised by its monumental architecture, the Italian murals from 1938 and the ceiling artwork Botanical Fresco (2025) by the artist Claudy Jongstra. That makes the Pleinfoyer a remarkable setting for events in one of the most characterful spaces in the building.
